Transform Your Body Image with Boudoir Photography
If I had to guess, you run from cameras like a rabid dog and would rather chew on nails than have to pose in your underwear. For the longest time, I thought that boudoir session only worked for models or newly married couples who need to spice things up in their relationships. But then I saw a hundred regular women go in scared and come out floating on clouds. Boudoir does not make you romantic. At its core, it is a process of making your brain understand the shape of your body.
Have you ever stood in front of your bathroom mirror? You see a flipped, two-dimensional version of yourself. You see a flipped, distorted version of your body at arm’s length under the glaring ceiling light. And that’s exactly why you perceive your body to be flawed – because it’s distorted by the reflection and exaggerated by the lighting. However, the camera does not capture your body in a distorted way. In most of my sessions, I use an 85mm portrait lens. The focal length of this particular lens produces images that are nearly impossible to distinguish from the human visual experience at a comfortable distance. The camera in your phone uses a 28mm wide-angle lens that creates an exaggerated distortion of edges, hence the weird elongated noses and shorter arms. You fight a technological illusion when you dislike your phone’s selfies. Boudoir photography defeats that illusion through controlled conditions.

That is exactly why the camera shows your true self better.
In addition to defeating distortion, the process of boudoir also takes advantage of the magical lighting. We don’t shoot with boring flat fluorescent lamps. We use directional diffused lighting that creates a shadow play on your body. You get illuminated from the top and the sides. Lighting that emphasizes the natural curves of your body and makes your waist appear slimmer and your neck longer. It’s not just about capturing the proportions of your body. It’s about enhancing them with controlled photons. You get captured in 3D on the camera. Something you can never achieve in a flat bathroom mirror.

It is my absolute pleasure to write this positive review. The experience I had in the photo shoot with Joshy was just one that I will never forget. I first got to know of him through a common friend whom he did a few photoshoots for and I actually admired his work. However, little did I know of his ability to make one feel at ease and this is one of his strengths in making his photos look so flawless and natural. His photos can actually SPEAK!!! Basically, his energy and passion comes across in the photos. He can also capture the essence of your character and style with so many wonderful images. Joshy is an extremely talented photographer, especially when it comes to capturing the subtleties and natural moments. He also masters lighting, and brings out the best possible angle that would compliment the overall composition of the photo. Professional and efficient, I strongly recommend Joshy George Photography. Book him now – you won’t regret it! Finally, I would like to thank you Joshy! I will treasure the photos for ever.
One more reason why you feel bad about your photos is called mere exposure effect. You look in the mirror every day. You see a reversed version of yourself. And when you see a photo, it looks distorted because it reverses your face back to normal position. As simple as that. A boudoir photographer knows about this effect and tries to flip the picture back to your reflected face orientation before you see it in your live shoot. And seeing a familiar version of yourself calms you down because the brain recognizes it. We use your psychology against your insecurities.

Back in 18th-century France, a boudoir was nothing more than a lady’s dressing room. A room where a lady would hide in to sulk or gossip without having any men in sight. It has never been about the male gaze at the start. Now, when you walk into this magical room, you leave the outer world behind. You all carry an invisible rolodex of perceived defects about yourself. You think your thighs are too soft, you hate your stretch marks. But in the studio session, you face those flaws straight on. I will position your body in such a way that you will realize that your flaws are just normal human geometry. You hip dips, your soft belly are all part of a beautiful woman.
But let’s talk about preparation first. It is the ultimate manifestation of self-respect, even if that word has become cliché. You put on your clothes that feel great on your skin. You do the extra effort and make yourself look the way you want to look. Whether it is a fancy piece of lingerie or an oversized sweater to give you that comforting feeling. You get your hair styled, you sit in the makeup chair and watch as your features are emphasized by a professional who knows everything about facial bone structure. You invest so much time and energy into your appearance. You walk into the studio with a cool posing stool touching your thighs, the scent of hairspray in the air, the steady rhythmic clicking of modeling lights. Your heart beats faster. Because you are going to take your pictures. It is your physical act of defiance to your negative inner voice.

I did a fitness boudoir shoot with Josh. Working with Josh was incredible. He is extremely patient, works with you to get the best photos and made me feel so so comfortable during my shoot. I will definitely be back for more photo sessions because I loved the experience and learnt so much from him!
We all hold so much garbage about ourselves in our heads. We scrutinize our faces in the mirror or on social media. Boudoir changes your perception. When you get to see photos of yourself in flattering positions and lightings, you get cognitive dissonance. You cannot keep saying you are ugly when you look at these gorgeous shots of your body. You get to see the way you should perceive yourself and not the distorted images in the bathroom mirror. Your self-image undergoes a radical transformation that affects other aspects of your life. You get over being ashamed of your body and start enjoying your own presence. You wear that little bit tighter shirt because it makes you feel good.
You won’t experience growth unless you push yourself to it. So, if you are waiting until you lose 10 pounds or have a clearer complexion, you are going to wait forever. A boudoir session requires you to push way beyond your limits. You have to stand in your underwear in front of a complete stranger and be ready to be photographed. It sounds pretty horrifying. But at the same time, it’s absolutely exhilarating. You train yourself to be comfortable with discomfort and learn that you will survive it. You understand that confidence is not about lack of fear. Confidence means that you will take a shot even if your knees tremble.
It took me a while to gather my courage and go ahead for a boudoir photoshoot, but Josh made it feel so natural and fun. He is truly a professional and an amazing artist. It was a great experience that I most certainly enjoyed and I might even repeat in the future. This is a must-do experience for any lady who desires tasteful master?class sensual photography. I don’t think of myself as a gorgeous woman, but I left the studio feeling as if I was on Cloud 9. The photos were amazing and I can’t wait to see the final product. If you are looking for a boudoir photoshoot then this is the place to do it.
I’ve witnessed plenty of women shedding tears looking at their proofs. But not the tears of sadness. Tears of happiness and relief, because they spent years hiding from themselves. In a boudoir session, you look at the camera back. This practice is called chimping and I love it. You look at a real unedited shot. Your face lights up. You point to the screen. Is that really you? That disbelief. You expect to see every flaw you hate magnified in the picture. But instead, you see a confident woman whose body exudes beauty and comfort. You feel an instant connection with yourself that rewrites your self?perception.
Let’s talk about the psychological impact of being photographed. Most of the times, people freeze. They give their best effort at a good pose that is usually characterized by an attempt to suck their bellies and plaster on a fake smile. The shoulders tighten, the eyes grow wide in terror. The best boudoir photographers know how to handle this. I give you countless directions on positioning. Move your weight onto your hip, relax your shoulders, look at my ear, tilt your head. Your analytical left brain is occupied by counting my instructions. Meanwhile, the right hemisphere feels comfortable with a directionless position and lets go. You stop worrying about sexiness and just let yourself be seen. People don’t respond to sexiness but presence. The camera captures this beautiful moment every single time.
It was a great experience to have a photoshoot with Joshy! He made me feel very comfortable from the very first moment and guided me through the positions with great patience and humour. I enjoyed the session a lot and the photos came out just perfect! Amanda’s friendly care and assistance was also super helpful. Thanks a million, Joshy!
We live in the society that thrives off insecurities of young women. Beauty industry wants you to hate your pores. Diet industry wants you to hate your belly. Fashion industry wants you to feel like you need a smaller size to look good. Boudoir session is an anti-corporate action taken for your own wellbeing. In the studio room, there is a direct opposite goal. We capture you exactly how you are today. With all your human imperfections. There is no retouching here, there is no artificial slimming. Just you, a couple of lights, and my lens. Rebellion happens the moment you take a look at your reflection on camera and realize it is okay. Not just okay, but gorgeous. Beautiful and confident. For a couple of hours, you stop being worried about yourself and just exist.
And now think about all the women in your life. Think about your mom, your sister, your best friends. How many times do they complain about their flaws? Everyday. When you go through a boudoir experience, you are not just fixing your own headspace. You start influencing those around you. You start complaining less and feeling more confident. Your friends start noticing changes. They wonder what has happened to you and maybe consider getting boudoir photos themselves. This process of positive influence goes wider than that. One successful woman inspires another.
Stop waiting for the perfect body. Perfect body is what you have right now. Get those photographs taken.
