Boudoir Photography That Tells Your Story

Feel the warm hum of the studio lights as they come to life, the faint metallic odor of flash units hanging in the air. The floor underfoot is cool, the chair making a faint creaking noise to confirm that this place has a soul. In this instance, the camera becomes a portal between the body you see in the mirror and the story you want to tell.

What a boudoir photo shoot truly accomplishes

While some come here to pose for glossy magazines, most use this time to capture a snapshot of themselves in an authentic way. The camera captures the relaxed posture of your shoulders when you know nobody is looking, the involuntary twitch of the mouth when you try not to smile. These subtle actions paint a picture that conveys the message “I am present. I own this.” The photos that appear weeks later will remind you of moments you would easily forget otherwise.

It took me a while to gather my courage and go ahead for a boudoir photoshoot, but Josh made it feel so natural and fun. He is truly a professional and an amazing artist. It was a great experience that I most certainly enjoyed and I might even repeat in the future. This is a must?do experience for any lady who desires tasteful master?class sensual photography. I don’t think of myself as a gorgeous woman, but I left the studio feeling as if I was on Cloud 9. The photos were amazing and I can’t wait to see the final product. If you are looking for a boudoir photoshoot then this is the place to do it.

Why do you choose such an experience

The assumption is that a boudoir shoot is something people give to their partners. Yet the majority of us actually decide to schedule it ourselves. For some, a special milestone like a birthday or getting a new job becomes a reason for celebrating with photos. Others simply need a reminder that their body has matured and needs attention. Whatever the reason, the mood you are going to share with your photographer will dictate the lighting and props for your shoot.

How the light paints your story

Physics of light can be unforgiving but very rewarding. The inverse square law states that doubling the distance from the light source means four times less exposure. By moving a softbox a couple of inches closer, you’ll flood the face of your client with the softest light while leaving the background in gentle roll?off. This contrast will make their skin look smooth without taking away the texture. On a cloudy day, I always try using the window as a diffuse source for the same effect. Softened by diffusion, the light falls gently onto their bodies and highlights their curves.

As for lenses, my go?to options include a 85?mm f/1.4 prime and a 50?mm f/1.8 prime. The former gives you more possibilities to isolate the subject and leave a creamy blur of the background. The latter gathers more light, allowing you to increase your shutter speed and prevent blurry pictures due to any accidental moves. With either option, keep your shutter at 1/125?second and ISO at 800.

I had a workshop/shoot with Josh. He was relaxed, gave clear directions and made the experience fun and comfortable. The final pictures are memorable for a lifetime.

Accessories that bring texture to your photo story

A set of light modifiers in my studio includes a 5?foot silver reflector, a black velvet flag, and a strip diffuser. The reflector will gather extra light and bounce it back onto a part of the body to bring out its textures. The flag will cut down unnecessary rim light and reduce the background brightness. Finally, the diffuser is used to spread the flash light over a greater area and soften the fall?off.

Malzie boudoir session

When you accidentally trip on the light trigger, it makes a loud clicking sound. Take a deep breath, adjust the battery of your camera, and assure your client that you will fix the shot in no time. Once they hear the whirring sound of fans inside the camera, they’ll calm down, realizing that all equipment is now working smoothly.

How to capture movement and spontaneity

Static shots sometimes look artificial if the subject feels anxious. Ask your client to think of a song that they love, and play it softly. By doing so, you will capture spontaneous movements of your client through burst shooting at 5 shots per second. You’ll find that each image has a slight difference: breathing, a change of facial expressions, and even the level of their confidence will make them look unique.

Try including some personal belongings to create an atmosphere. An old book, a vintage necklace, or a coffee mug may help you tell the story of the person who wears it. The prop shouldn’t be dominant but rather provide another element that can help the viewer imagine the environment.

The physical reality of prolonged shoot

Two?hour sessions require significant physical efforts as subjects stand on tiptoes to stretch the leg, strain their muscles to hold their posture, and grab props tightly. To avoid cramps, I place a stool nearby so that the subject can rest if needed. I suggest the studio air conditioner to work on low to make the environment as comfortable as possible. I also spray the room with lavender oil to ease the nerves.

Let’s start with the fact that he’s not only an exquisite photographer, but a great person at the same time. We recently worked together, always professional and able to make me feel comfortable at every single shot. No need to say that the final result was obviously amazing! Thanks Josh!

Unexpected yet profound change in a client’s mind?set

The clients often report that after the first few clicks, their confidence level goes through the roof unexpectedly. This comes as a pleasant surprise because the photos aren’t just showing their bodies. Instead, they capture the fact that they were present in a space where they felt accepted and appreciated. That’s why the increased self?esteem can easily be noticed at work and among friends.

One data point worth bookmarking

In case you are planning to set up a home studio, I suggest buying Godox AD600Pro. It is a powerful 600?Ws flash gun, which I successfully sync with the off?camera trigger. My combo usually includes the gun, a 85?mm f/1.4 lens, and a 5?foot softbox. I’ve tried other variations but never achieved better results in portrait photography than these.
